Abyss Gazes Back at a Village Under Siege
Abyss Gazes Back is a 5E adventure for 4–6 characters of levels 10–12. Barkuuth is fighting for its survival. Refugees report that fallen soldiers are rising from their graves to return to battle, and General Tragorn needs to know why.
The party’s investigation begins at a field hospital near the village. Its doctors are busy burying the latest casualty. They insist the rumors are nonsense, but their guarded answers leave plenty of room for doubt.
Find the Truth Before Nightfall
Question the surgeons, examine the graves, and search the hospital for evidence. Medical journals and a suspicious death can expose what the doctors have done. However, gaining their trust or forcing a confession takes careful investigation and roleplay.
As darkness falls, a demon returns with its undead soldiers. The heroes must decide how to confront a bargain that protects Barkuuth at a terrible cost. Their earlier discoveries affect whether the doctors stand with them, flee, or support the fiend.
A Wartime Investigation for Your Campaign
Place Abyss Gazes Back near a threatened settlement or along the edge of an ongoing war. A general’s request gives the party a direct reason to investigate, while the hospital grounds keep the adventure focused on a small, tense location.
The conclusion supports confrontation, negotiation, or the consequences of leaving the bargain intact. This gives players room to weigh the village’s immediate danger against the cost of its defenders.
