A Grim Jester Adventure in the Town of Cwens

This grim jester adventure for 5E challenges 4–5 characters of levels 10–12. In Ho, Ho, H’Oh No!, the town of Cwens has lost its self-important leader, Brable Snollygoster. His death seemed absurd, but the strange deaths that follow are far less amusing.

Mourners have begun to laugh and weep uncontrollably. Others have turned to stone, and the council has abandoned its chambers. The party must investigate a threat that has claimed the town square and now uses its former home as a lair.

Turn the Town Square Against Its Tormentor

Snollygoster has returned as a grim jester, armed with malicious magic and the favor of a dark deity. Defeating him once may not end the danger. Instead, the heroes must find ways to turn his cruel performance against him and make his patron laugh at his expense.

The surrounding buildings offer tools for that task. Garden rakes, loose masonry, runaway piglets, and an avalanche of musical instruments can become part of the fight. As the characters explore the square, each location gives them another chance to improvise an embarrassing defeat for their foe.

Use this grim jester adventure when the party reaches a town in need of help. The disturbing deaths provide a clear investigation hook. However, the confrontation rewards creative use of the surroundings as well as the heroes’ usual combat abilities.

Ten keyed locations connect shops, homes, a cathedral frontage, and the council chambers. The adventure also supplies unusual magic items and altered creatures for the jester’s act. Review his special abilities before play so his tricks remain easy to run during a chaotic encounter.
