Fires of Ambition: A D&D 5E Guild-War Rescue
Mini-Dungeon for 4–6 characters of levels 2–4.
D&D 5E • Forest • Infiltration • Timed Rescue
Fires of Ambition sends the characters into a trapped stoneworkers’ hall where a staged kidnapping could ignite war between Calhoth’s guilds. The mission begins as a discreet rescue and can become a five-round race through smoke, flames, and armed resistance.
Adventure Description
Brewmaster Elwurt believes an old feud has reached his family. Months ago, Almara’s brother died during a brawl at Brewers’ Hall. Elwurt was present, although the magistrate declared him innocent. Almara, a stoneworker, swore vengeance.
Now Elwurt’s sister, Ryneth, has disappeared. A threatening note and a reading of Elwurt’s runestones indicate that she is alive inside Shaper Hall, the stoneworkers’ headquarters in a dense grove outside Calhoth. Elwurt wants hardened professionals to recover her without involving the law or connecting the Brewers’ Guild to the mission.
However, Almara did not arrange the kidnapping. Fantomar wants to unite Calhoth’s guilds beneath his Freehands labor guild. He hired the Fellshade mercenaries to abduct Ryneth, implicate Almara, occupy Shaper Hall, and leave both sides to die in a fire. He expects the resulting guild war to clear his path to power.
Every window and door in Shaper Hall has been trapped by Meekus, a kobold trapsmith. Careful characters can unlock an entrance and move quietly. A forced entry alerts the kobold and ratfolk mercenaries, allowing their coordinated defense to begin immediately.
Once Magnus, the Fellshade leader, learns that rescuers have entered, he can ignite the accelerant-soaked floors and signal his crew to escape through a concealed tunnel. Ryneth, Almara, and two stoneworkers remain chained inside. The characters then have five rounds to free the prisoners and escape the burning hall.
Magnus also carries the contract that documents Fantomar’s plot. Recovering it can reconcile the rival guilds, bring Fantomar to justice, and make the characters honored citizens of Calhoth.
Why Fires of Ambition Is Different
The characters determine how quickly the crisis escalates. A quiet infiltration delays the alarm and gives them time to investigate. A noisy entrance brings the mercenaries into action. Once the fire begins, every round forces new choices between combat, evidence, prisoners, and escape.
- Multiple entry points that reward stealth and preparation
- Trapped doors and windows throughout the hall
- Coordinated kobold and ratfolk defenders
- An escalating smoke-and-fire hazard
