Mini-Dungeon #323: Claws in Cold Water
A DnD 5E Festival Adventure – Conquer the Totem Dive, a thrilling DnD 5E water adventure!
Looking for a vivid DnD 5E festival challenge to drop into your icy northlands or lakeside campaign? Rybalka’s beloved spring tradition, the Totem Dive, is underway. Teams plunge into the freezing shallows of Serpent Lake in a relay-style contest to recover carved animal totems scattered underwater. Friendly rivalry, community pride, and seasonal celebration set the tone. However, something far more dangerous stirs in the depths.
This year, an unwelcome kra’tah has claimed one of the deepest totems. As a result, the competition becomes a sudden struggle for survival. What begins as a festive challenge soon becomes a rescue effort and an underwater chase. Ultimately, it evolves into a monster hunt across the lake’s icy outskirts. Therefore, the heroes must adapt quickly or the festival will end in disaster.
What’s Included
-
Festival-Themed Challenge Adventure
Join the annual Totem Dive alongside local teams of warriors and fishers. Recover totems at 10, 20, and 30 feet in a structured, round-based underwater relay where perception, timing, and stamina matter. -
Cold-Water Survival Hazards
The frigid waters of Serpent Lake threaten divers with hyperventilation and hypothermia. These environmental rules add tension and realism as characters push their limits in the icy depths. -
Underwater Monster Encounter
A kra’tah lurks at the edge of the contest area with a totem lodged in its shell. Clever divers may retrieve it unnoticed, but any misstep unleashes a dangerous attack. Victory can earn bonus rewards, including valuable kra’tah roe. -
Expanded Adventure Sites
If the creature escapes, the pursuit leads to a nearby island featuring a haunted cellar, a decrepit dock rich with bloody lichen, fallen trees hiding rival warriors, and a kra’tah nest within ruined longhouses. -
New Resource: Bloody Lichen
This rare lake growth can be harvested and powdered to briefly stun and blind a kra’tah. Consequently, it gives clever parties a tactical advantage. -
Fully Illustrated Map
Includes a complete dive zone and island map with clearly numbered locations, ideal for in-person play or VTT integration. - New Monster
A Mini-Dungeon first! A new monster is included with your dungeon. The deadly kra’tah as seen in A03: Champion’s Rest has resurfaced and been completely rebuilt for D&D 2024.
Level Range
Designed for 4–6 characters of levels 3–4, it offers a perfect mid-tier festival sidetrek. In addition, it serves as a short, punchy challenge between major quest arcs.
Why Choose Claws in Cold Water
This adventure combines competition, environmental danger, underwater exploration, and a thrilling creature hunt. It delivers all of these elements in a compact format that’s easy to run and memorable to play. Moreover, it adds depth to Rybalka’s regional traditions while remaining flexible enough to fit into any cold-climate setting.
Ideal as a standalone one-shot or a flavorful addition to any Arctic, coastal, or Viking-inspired campaign world.

These mini dungeons are great for one shots or to drop in your world. I’ve purchased both Dungeon Tomes and map packs in Pdf formats. Other one shots out there are just too goofy or lack info. These are just concise enough to work well in any game situation.

Fun little race adventure that is crashed by angry crab. I have a perfect spot for this in our campaign should my group venture that way.
