Mini-Dungeon for 4–5 characters of levels 6–7.
A Forbidden Book Disappears
The characters are consulting with a scholar at the Great Librarium when an alarm rings through the building. Someone has entered the restricted collection and stolen The Chained Tome, a notorious work of fiendish lore.
Witnesses saw a cloaked figure fleeing toward the Narrows, a network of subterranean canals beneath the city. The characters are asked to follow before the thief disappears—or delivers the book to whoever commissioned the theft.
The fugitive has planned carefully. Magic concealed his appearance and changed his size, causing his muddy trail to alter midway through the pursuit. Characters can follow physical evidence, question the Narrows’ inhabitants, or draw upon their knowledge of the city’s buried history to find the route he took.
Into the Narrows
The Narrows began as streams feeding the city’s river. As streets and buildings spread overhead, the waterways became canals and were eventually buried beneath the expanding city. Abandoned structures still stand along the dark passages, claimed by squatters, criminals, and anyone who prefers to remain unseen.
The characters’ trail leads toward the Bait & Tackle, a disreputable tavern built inside several of these forgotten buildings. Reaching it is not entirely straightforward. The thief has sabotaged a makeshift bridge to collapse beneath his pursuers, dropping the unwary into murky water filled with hungry quipper swarms.
Other clues wait along the way, including a hungover swordsman disturbed by suspicious noises and vagrants who insist that the fleeing figure somehow shrank to half its former size.
Trouble at the Bait & Tackle
More than a dozen rough-looking patrons crowd the Bait & Tackle while its owner watches from behind a bar assembled from wooden crates. Somewhere among them, the thief is attempting to blend into the room.
Careful investigation, insight, or discreet questioning can expose him. A careless accusation may offend the tavern’s patrons and ignite a full-scale brawl. If cornered, the thief accuses the characters of being city guards and uses the resulting confusion to slip toward the storeroom.
Characters who wait may instead witness the arrival of the buyer’s agent, allowing them to discover more about the intended sale. The buyer’s identity is left open for the GM, making the theft easy to connect to an existing villain, cult, noble house, or criminal organization.
Hidden among the crates in the storeroom is The Chained Tome. A summoned demon guards it from the darkness and remains in telepathic contact with the thief.
The book itself may prove as dangerous as those trying to steal it. This very rare warlock item can alter its owner’s pact and allow the wielder to exchange places with a familiar across great distances. Persistent rumors claim that its owners eventually become the “familiars” of something far more powerful—and then vanish without explanation.
