The Oracle Has Fallen Silent

High in the mountains, the oracle of Thylos receives those willing to make the arduous climb to his secluded cave. Pilgrims bring offerings ranging from simple food to rare treasures, hoping that the oracle’s wisdom will resolve a difficult choice, explain an omen, or reveal the meaning behind an ancient mystery.

The characters have questions of their own, but troubling news awaits them in the town below. Recent petitioners have been turned away from the oracle’s sanctuary, and some who attempted the journey have never returned. The town depends heavily upon the steady passage of pilgrims, yet its residents are more concerned about what may have happened inside the cave. They beg the characters to investigate.

The truth is far worse than an oracle refusing visitors. Amydra, a devotee of the void, once sought the oracle’s help interpreting an ancient inscription. Dissatisfied with his answer, she returned with fellow cultists, overwhelmed his acolytes, and took the oracle captive.

False Acolytes in a Sacred Hall

Cult fanatics now pose as the oracle’s attendants, greeting visitors beneath the watchful eyes of four cyclops statues. Observant characters may notice religious symbols that betray their true allegiance. A convincing party might even pose as fellow cultists, gaining information that could help them bypass the sanctuary’s defenses.

Beyond the entrance stands the Hall of Prosperity, its walls covered with scenes celebrating fertile fields and abundant harvests. The cult has trapped this once-welcoming passage with a freezing glyph that can be avoided by those who know the proper prayer.

Deeper inside, the oracle’s sacred spring has also been corrupted. What was once used for scrying now releases poisonous vapors capable of leaving intruders blinded. The oracle’s surviving acolytes have been imprisoned nearby, suffering from the same poison and initially unsure whether the characters have come to rescue them or finish what the cult began.

Characters who earn their trust and tend to their injuries can gain healing, valuable information, and a clearer understanding of the caves ahead.

Where Every Echo Becomes a Threat

The oracle’s ceremonial platform was designed to carry his voice throughout the sanctuary. Its raised dais amplifies every word, while a permanent zone of truth provides an unusual refuge from the creatures haunting the natural caverns beyond.

Those caverns descend through steep terraces into darkness. Echo demons stalk the ledges, surrounding intruders with supernatural noise and attempting to drive them toward the lower reaches of the cave. The demons’ cacophony cannot penetrate the zone of truth, making the oracle’s platform both a tactical sanctuary and a place from which clever characters can regroup.

At the far end of the complex lies the treasury where generations of pilgrims left their offerings. Amydra and her followers hold the oracle there, torturing him in a desperate attempt to obtain the answer she believes was denied to her.

Echo of the Oracle combines investigation, deception, traps, environmental hazards, and demanding combat within a compact mountain sanctuary. It can be placed above nearly any isolated settlement, used when the characters seek prophetic guidance, or introduced whenever an important source of divine wisdom suddenly falls silent.
