Drow Elves
Manipulators of Deceit, Darkness and Duplicity
An overview of the history, characteristics, and culture of drow elves—the mysterious race known for mastering deception, manipulation, and control of the Underworld’s darkness. Learn about their unique traits, strict societal structure, and deeply rooted traditions.
Introduction to Drow Elves

The drow, exiled from the surface, retreated into the Underworld. What began as punishment became their source of power. The darkness amplified their cunning, encouraging them to embrace malevolent intentions.
Believing Naraneus the Spider Goddess guided their escape, the drow adapted to their concealment. They discovered that secrecy could lead to great achievements. Rather than destroy the dark entities that already lived there, they assimilated their cunning, cruelty, and intelligence. By blending these traits with their own, they rose to prominence, transforming cities like Holoth into marvels of the Underworld.
History of the Drow Elves
Ancient Origins

Despite their reputation as a powerful race, the drow are considered young in the Underworld. They labeled other subterranean races as “degenerati,” dismissing them as monstrous and crude. In turn, many Underworlders viewed the drow as mere upstarts.
However, the drow brought innovative magic, advanced engineering, and calculated leadership. While some races still regard them as newcomers, their goddess, Naraneus, predates most Underworld deities. Over thousands of years, the drow refined her teachings, sharpening them into precise instruments—whether in battle, magic, or politics.
Exile and Underworld Society
Surface elves regard the drow as a twisted reflection of their kin. However, the drow see themselves as pragmatic and disciplined. They maintain strict social order, rewarding compliance and punishing disobedience.
After being exiled, the drow discovered Naraneus would bless those who ensured their survival. What began as banishment soon became a determined migration, laying the foundation for their calculated and ruthless society.

Character of Drow Elves
Drow elves place their own interests above all else. Their obsession with status drives their every thought and action. To gain favor, they carefully manipulate their behavior to appear obedient or loyal.
Drow relationships are tense. Admiration or envy often turns to resentment or outright hostility. Understanding a drow’s true intentions is difficult. They use gestures, body language, and vocal inflection to mask their meanings. The tilt of their head, the angle of a smile, or the openness of their hands can all alter the meaning of their words.
A drow matriarch’s welcoming smile may seem warm, yet her followers could already be preparing an assassination.
The Art of “Honest Dishonesty”
Drow communication relies heavily on deception. While their words may seem sincere, everything they say is calculated. However, once an agreement is made, it is binding—until circumstances change.
Drow Culture & Community
Worship of Naraneus and Matriarchy

The drow worship Naraneus, who guided them during their expulsion from the Upperworld. While minor deities have risen and fallen, Naraneus has remained a constant force.
Drow religious ceremonies are complex. They celebrate their unity as a race while cunningly fulfilling the goddess’ commands. Naraneus actively rewards her loyal clergy and ensures her influence keeps drow society stable.
In her favor, Naraneus promotes a strict matriarchal system. Only the strongest females rise to power, ensuring the continuation of elite bloodlines. As a result, drow society is ruled by powerful matriarchs, while males rarely achieve dominant roles.
Unique Traits & Abilities

Opportunistic Nature
Drow possess a remarkable ability to turn any situation to their advantage. Even failure can become a stepping stone for future success. While some see their adaptability as stubbornness, it reveals their calculated nature.
The Bond of Possessions
Drow elves forge deep connections with their personal items. Upperworlders often misunderstand drow weapons and armor. These items weaken in sunlight due to their crafting methods, but they also degrade when separated from their owner.
Over time, a portion of the drow’s soul becomes intertwined with their weapon, enhancing its power. If that bond is severed, the item quickly deteriorates.
The Ever-Changing Web of Drow Society
The drow’s blend of ambition, manipulation, and cunning has made them masters of the Underworld. Their society thrives on deception and opportunism, ensuring only the most ruthless survive and prosper.
For adventurers brave enough to face these dark elves, beware: In the world of the drow, nothing is ever as it seems.
