Serpent Lake – Mysteries, Monsters, and Sacred Waters
Serpent Lake is an enormous glacial lake system that winds its way through the heart of the Vikmordere Valley, carved by ancient ice over two thousand years ago. Its winding, labyrinthine shape makes navigation treacherous; only those with experienced navigators and sturdy boats dare traverse its channels. Many who enter without preparation vanish beneath the waters, swallowed by the serpentine corridors of the lake.
The lake’s name comes from the slimy black serpents said to dwell beneath the surface. Occasional sightings of massive, scaled creatures have given rise to legends of a behemoth Serpent that lurks in the depths, capable of devouring entire vessels. To the Vikmordere, this lake is sacred. To travelers, it is dangerous. And to monsters, it is home.

Environment & Climate
The southern edge of the lake is a region uniquely shaped by glacial retreat. Framed between mountains to the west and the lake to the east, this narrow strip of land was freed from the ice only a few centuries ago. While sages link the receding glacier to ancient magic from the Sun Lord Ka’teek and the Ancestor People, the result is an ecosystem still in recovery.
Summers arrive late, with snow often lingering until July. Spring and summer are generally quiet, while autumn brings intense storms. Temperatures range from -20°C to 30°C. Despite this, the waters help regulate the region, making it more temperate than the surrounding plains.
Flora and Recolonization
Plant life reflects the gradual recolonization of the region:
- North: barren and rocky, covered in nitrogen-poor “black crust.”
- Central: moss, fireweed, scouring rush, dryas, and alder thickets.
- South: spruce trees, muskeg, and denser growth near the Serpent Tail.
Notable plants:
- Dranden Flower: White petals with red centers, found on southern rocks.
- Algrass: A red, algae-like plant that releases paralytic seeds if stepped on. (DC 12 Nature or Survival check to spot.)
Wildlife and Natural Threats
Unlike plants, animals have repopulated unevenly due to geographic barriers. Common land mammals are rare. However, the region is far from lifeless. Noteworthy wildlife includes:
- Glacier Toad: Hardy amphibian that thrives in icy regions.
- Freshwater Seals: Bask along rocky shores; preyed on by larger monsters.
- Gilded Sea Serpent: Drawn to the Dranden Flower, its golden hide is holy to the Vikmordere and highly valuable.
- Greater Tentamort: Tentacled horrors found near the southern lake regions.
- Giant Lake Octopus & Giant Reefclaw: Apex aquatic threats.
- Bukkavac & Bagiennik: Dangerous amphibious predators and unpredictable aberrations.
- Seadrake: A powerful predator stalking the lakeshore.
- Bloodhawk: Aggressive bird known to attack humans.
Notable Sites and Hazards
Valley of Colorful Geysers
A hidden valley near the lakeside, famous for its six erupting geysers. When active, the geysers spray multicolored mists in mesmerizing patterns. Some believe these colors form a magical code, though it remains undeciphered.
Malachite Grotto
A dazzling cavern at the valley’s western edge, rich in green stone. Dwarves failed to mine it due to a protective stonedruid who guards the grotto fiercely. While she tolerates visitors, theft of even a single stone is met with wrath.
