Dark Wood – A Cursed Forest of Devils and Dread

Dark Wood – Cursed Forest of Devils and Dread

The Dark Wood is a cursed forest steeped in infernal corruption and ancient betrayal. Even the most battle-hardened Vikmordere whisper prayers when passing its shadowed eaves. Legends abound of devils, headless druids, cursed lycanthropes, and soul-warping hazards lurking beneath the twisted canopy. But the forest is not merely a place of horror—it is a living wound upon the world, a scar etched by eldritch folly and infernal vengeance.

A Rift Torn Wide

Long ago, the forest was a thriving sanctuary of life and balance, watched over by a circle of half-elven druids devoted to the primal forces of nature. Their quest for deeper knowledge led to hubris—and ultimately, corruption.

Tempted by whispers from a devil lord, their leader attempted a grand ritual at the Stone Circle of Roots, believing he could bind the forest to the spirit of the world itself. Instead, he tore open a rift to Hel, a malevolent plane of devils and torment. What followed was swift and ruinous.

A tide of devils poured into the forest, slaying centaurs, fairies, and beasts, transforming flora and fauna into twisted horrors. The druids were betrayed, dragged back to the stone circle, and ritually executed. Their bodies cursed, their souls tethered to the forest.

Now, they rise as headless undead hunters each sunset, endlessly seeking vengeance upon the devils they once unwittingly served, only to fall again with the coming dawn. They have become part of the Dark Woods ecosystem of torment.

“Beware the stone circle. For at dusk, you will not hear footsteps—only the wind wheezing through the necks of those who hunt headless.” — Last entry from the journal of Ranger Vrenna Holtsdottir

The Devil Bakinqa

The infamous devil Bakinqa was born in the Dark Wood. Raised among the stranded infernal remnants, he was drawn to human knowledge and alchemy. After his father was slain by a human boy named Thorin, Bakinqa dedicated his life to vengeance.

Through dark alchemical rituals and a magical Tome of Lycanthrope Control, Bakinqa gained power over werewolves using fetish dolls made from twigs and polished stones. Each doll bound the spirit of a cursed lycanthrope to his will, allowing him to spy through their eyes and command them like puppets.

This led to the events of A02: Devil of Dark Wood, where Bakinqa kidnapped villagers and manipulated them through lycanthropy and possession. His lair, the forgotten Devil’s Cave, became a hotspot for infernal activity, reclaimed only through great cost and bloodshed.

Hazards of the Hel-Forest

The Dark Wood adventure setting is not simply home to monsters—it is hostile to life itself. The very landscape pulses with infernal influence:

  • Pits-of-Hel Vents spew destructive energy from other planes, dealing elemental damage to the unwary. See: Hazards of Dark Wood PDF.
  • Noilitions, zones of muffled screams from beyond, sap the will and perception of intruders.
  • Sparclies, devil-imbued fireflies, unleash lethal arcs of lightning when disturbed.
  • Unhallowed Gold, glimmers with hypnotic allure, drawing greedy adventurers into ambushes.
  • Boom Bogs and Muculent Marshians erupt with poisonous gases and clinging Hel-born bile.

Even foraging here is dangerous. Natural resources often wear false appearances—harmless berries might be rot grubs in disguise, and curative herbs could instead trigger violent hallucinations. See: Dark Wood Foraging and Hunting PDF.

Foraging, Hunting, and Dying

Within Dark Wood: Foraging and Hunting, survival rules are twisted by the forest’s chaotic nature. Even experienced rangers may take days to locate rare ingredients or safely stalk prey. Lesser hazards guard greater ones, and the moment of success is often when true danger strikes.

Many of the forest’s creatures are infernal hybrids or cursed transformations. More than one would-be hunter has become the hunted, falling victim to lycanthropy, cursed relics, or worse.

Curses, Cycles, and Despair

It is said that the forest feeds on regret. The undead druidsBakinqa’s bound werewolves, and the monsters birthed from the rift all suffer unending cycles of torment.

One survivor, a druidess who escaped the original massacre, passed her knowledge to her descendants in secrecy. Her line protects the location of an artifact capable of purifying the Dark Wood—but only if revealed at the proper time. If uncovered too early, it may fall into infernal hands and doom the entire region.

The Sun Lord Ka’Teek, a legendary Vikmordere paladin, once sealed the original rift with powerful magic, sacrificing his health and life. His story is detailed in Dark Wood Survivalism.

Each foray deeper into the forest threatens not just your body—but your sense of reality.
