Overview
Rybalka sits nestled between the mountains and the frigid Serpent Lake. It is a remote melting pot of Klavekian settlers and Vikmordere natives—cultural tensions remain, but unity against the harsh frontier and outside threats keeps the village standing. Lookout Walk atop old wooden palisades serves as the unofficial boundary between safety and the wild.
History
Originally a Vikmordere village known for its strategic location and nearby iron mine, Rybalka was seized by the Klavek Empire after prolonged and bloody conflict. Though many Vikmordere were displaced or killed, some remained, becoming craftsmen and laborers. The Klavek Empire installed a permanent garrison to defend the mine and village.
Economy
Fishing: The prized “Rybalkan Cod” from Serpent Lake is highly sought in Mohkba.
Logging: The West Fold Lumber Mill sends timber down the lake to the empire.
Mining: Overseen by the Rybalkan Miners Guild, the iron mine northeast of the village is the most valuable export.
Climate & Seasons
- Summer: Up to 65°F (18°C); blooming flora and an active lakeshore.
- Winter: As low as 8°F (-13°C); much of Serpent Lake freezes, halting boat travel.
- Spring/Summer: Celebratory feasts occur before fall’s chill returns.
Religion
Rybalka’s cathedral is officially dedicated to the Axiomatic General (law, justice, war) but welcomes worship of the Ancestor Spirit and other deities. The religious culture blends Klavekian and Vikmordere traditions. Totems and charms are common to ward off the evils of the Dark Wood.
Cultural Practices
- Antlers over doorways symbolize virility.
- Aromatic herbs and stones are added by wives for protection.
- A carved wooden disc is hung for newborns, blessed by Vikmordere shamans.
