Mistress of the Web (rogue archetype)

The dark elves are a race of cunning, manipulative creatures made all the more so by their ruthless upbringing. Some drow rogues, however, are exceptionally devious, honing their talent for scheming into a weapon of incredible potency. Some are well known and others are whispers only spoken of in the highest circles, but all are masters of first-hand knowledge in the Underworld. These clever drow run crime syndicates, hold courts of nobles in their grasp, and are the masters of felonious goods and services wherever they dwell.

 

Race Most mistresses of the web are drow by far, but any truly devious and manipulative person might pursue this archetype. Those that have exceptional and myriad connections, or are particularly well-informed (even when considered against their peers) make the best of mistresses.

 

Poisonous Words (Ex) The mistress of the web is a cultural prodigy, trained to control and manipulate the etiquette and social mores of societies (both above and below Aventyr’s surface). Upon meeting a new intelligent creature with a shared spoken language, the mistress of the web may make a Linguistics check (DC 10 + target’s hit die + target’s Wisdom modifier). On a success, the mistress recognizes the dialect, vernacular, and colloquialisms used by her target’s homeland, gaining a +1 circumstance bonus to all Charisma-based skill and ability checks made against them and an additional +2 bonus to Disguise and Sense Motive checks against them. This bonus increases by +1 every four levels.

Should the mistress of the web share a known mutual casual acquaintance with her target, she receives a circumstance bonus to the Linguistics check equal to ⅓ her class level. This is a language-based effect.

This ability replaces trapfinding.

 

Venomous Whispers (Ex) So fell and all-encompassing is the mistress of the web’s knowledge and understanding of other races and societies, she always seems to know influential people in influential places. When making a poisonous words check, should the mistress of the web’s Linguistics’ check succeed the DC by twice her target’s hit die (or more), the bonuses to Charisma-based skill and ability checks double (as do the bonus to Disguise and Sense Motive checks).

Should the mistress of the web share a known mutual close friend or ally with her target, she receives a circumstance bonus to the Linguistics check equal to ½ her class level. This ability replaces trap sense.

 

 

Detect Thoughts (Sp) From 2nd level, a mistress of the web may use detect thoughts as a spell-like ability a number of times per day equal to ½ her class level (minimum 1; her class level equals her caster level). Resisting this effect requires a successful Will save (DC 10 + ½ class level + Charisma modifier). This ability replaces evasion; improved evasion cannot be selected as an advanced talent unless the mistress of the web acquires it from another source.

 

Surreptitious Strike (Ex) A mistress of the web focuses more on the deadliness of her words rather than her actions, using subtle distractions to gain the upper hand in any encounter. She gains sneak attack +1d6 at 2nd level, and an additional +1d6 every three levels thereafter, to a maximum of +7d6 at 20th level. This ability modifies (and replaces) sneak attack.

 

Charm Humanoid (Sp) A mistress of the web spins exceptional lies and persuasions. From 3rd level, she can create a charm person effect (using the character’s rogue level as the caster level) except that the effect is not subject to spell resistance and can affect any humanoid with an Intelligence score that shares a language with the mistress of the web (even constructs, undead, and other creatures normally immune to enchantments or mind-affecting effects). Resisting this effect requires a successful Will save (DC 10 + ½ class level + Charisma modifier). A mistress of the web may use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1/3 her class level (minimum 1). At 8th level, treat this effect as though it were the charm monster spell but producing an extraordinary (nonmagical) effect, and at 16th level, this ability can be used to duplicate the dominate monster spell (neither being subject to spell resistance, or immunity to enchantments or mind-affecting effects, but in this case a typical spell-like ability). These are language-based effects. This ability replaces trap sense and the rogue talents gained at levels 8 and 16.

 

Underhanded Suggestion (Sp) The deceptions woven by a mistress of the web become truly preternatural. From 8th level, she can create a suggestion effect as a spell-like ability (using the character’s class level as the caster level) except that it is not subject to spell resistance and can affect any creature with an Intelligence score that shares a language with the mistress of the web (even constructs, undead and other creatures normally immune to enchantments or mind-affecting effects). Resisting this effect requires a successful Will save (DC 10 + ½ class level + Charisma modifier). A mistress of the web may use this ability a number of times per day equal to 1/3 her class level (minimum 1). At 12th level, underhanded suggestion produces an extraordinary (nonmagical) effect. These are language-based effects. This ability replaces improved uncanny dodge.

 

Mistresses of the web have access to these two new rogue talents.

Unsettling Words (Ex): A mistress of the web with this rogue talent can cause any creature that shares a spoken language and has an Intelligence score to become confused for a number of rounds equal to her rogue level as a standard action; a Will save (DC 10 + ½ rogue level + Charisma modifier) suppresses the effect, but it continues each round until the duration expires. Creatures immune to mind-affecting effects are still affected by this ability. This is a language-based effect. The mistress of the web may use unsettling words a number of times per day equal to her Charisma modifier.

Debaucherous Doubt (Ex): A mistress of the web with this advanced rogue talent can use the unsettling words rogue talent to cause a creature to become confused for a number of minutes equal to rogue level and the DC to resist the effect increases by +4. The mistress of the web must have the unsettling words rogue talent before she can choose this talent.

 

Rogue Talents:

The following rogue talents complement the mistress of the web archetype: black market connections, canny observer, charmer, coax information, convincing lie, guileful polyglot, hard to fool, honeyed words, minor magic, major magic, strong impression, and unsettling words.

Advanced Talents: The following advanced rogue talents complement the mistress of the web archetype: debaucherous doubt, hard to fool, rumormonger, skill mastery, slippery mind, thoughtful reexamining, and unwitting ally.

 

 

Master of the Web (monk archetype)

The master of the web is a monk unlike any other in Aventyr or any place in the Planes. These drow gain the ability to shoot webs from their hands and craft vehement taunts to draw their opponents into the fatal latticework of their complex martial arts style. Frenetic warriors, they traverse the battlefield in flips, cartwheels, leaps and bounds, carried along by their arachnid blessings with a speed that defies convention.

Alignment Masters of the web may be of any alignment but lawful, so long as they are within one alignment step of the spider deity they worship.

Race While drow* are most common amongst their ranks, any sufficiently devout follower of a spider deity, or an intelligent arachnid of exquisite quality, may take the master of the web class. Ettercaps that assume monk levels typically become masters of the web.

*Male drow in Aventyr normally suffer a -2 racial penalty to Intimidate checks, but those that pursue the path of the master of the web are alleviated of that penalty by their patron goddess.

 

Spider Style (Ex): These monks are trained in a form of combat that emulates the frenetic, darting, dangerous movements of an enraged spider. At 1st level, the master of the web gains the Arachnid Stance feat for free. At 7th level, they receive the Webbed Warrior feat for free. At 10th level they gain the Sight of the Spider feat for free. These feats replace the bonus monk combat feats gained at 1st, 2nd and 10th level.

 

Vitriolic Tongue (Ex): Masters of the web may not have as great a facility with words as their female counterparts, but their wit can be just as biting. At 1st level, a master of the web may taunt a specific individual within earshot (in a language both understand) as a move action. He makes an Intimidate check to determine the effectiveness of the taunt.

A successfully taunted victim becomes incensed and suffers a -1 morale penalty to all attack rolls, checks, and Will saves against the master of the web until the beginning of the target’s next turn. They are also compelled to attack him; they become so irritated that they lose focus on other opponents, granting a +1 circumstance bonus to any attack rolls made by creatures other than the master of the web. These bonuses and penalties increase by one to +2 at 4th level and every four levels after, to a maximum of +6 at 20th level.

On its next turn, the taunted victim must attempt to make a melee or ranged attack against the master of the web, target him with a spell, or include him in the area of a spell. The effect ends if the creature is prevented from attacking him or attempting to do so would harm it (for example, if the master of the web is on the other side of a chasm or a wall of fire). If it cannot attack the master of the web on its turn, the master of the web may make the check again as an immediate action to extend the effect for 1 round (but cannot extend it thereafter; this does not expend a use of vitriolic tongue). Vitriolic tongue may be used in conjunction with the Antagonize feat, though any overlapping effects do not stack.

For every successful use of vitriolic tongue made against a target, the master of the web suffers a cumulative -1 penalty to Intimidate checks against them for a number of rounds equal to the penalty incurred by vitriolic tongue. The master of the web may use vitriolic tongue a number of times per day equal to his monk level.

At 5th level, a master of the web becomes more adept at taunting their victims, and are able to do so as a swift action.

At 12th level, a master of the web can taunt an individual as a free action, but can never affect more than one such individual per round.

This ability replaces stunning fist.

 

Spider Climb (Sp) At 3rd level you use spider climb as a spell-like ability usable once per day per two class levels. This ability replaces still mind.

 

Brachiation (Ex) At 4th level, as a free action for a number of rounds per day equal to your master of the web level, you gain a climb speed equal to your land speed, and a circumstance bonus on Acrobatics checks equal to your master of the web level. These rounds do not have to be consecutive.

 

Ki Blows (Su) A master of the web does not gain any ki points. However, at 4th level he still gains the ability to use ki strike to allow his unarmed strike to be treated as magic (4th), lawful (10th) and adamantine (16th) weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction as normal at the usual levels, as though he had at least one ki point. A master of the web may gain ki points if they are granted by another class, but never gains any as a monk. This ability is identical in all other ways to ki pool, and replaces that ability. Masters of the web may still use ki blows to as a qualifier for feats, abilities, prestige classes and the like.

 

Arachnid Appendages (Ex): The master of the web is granted blessings that allow him to better emulate the spiders he is devoted to. At 6th level, you can temporarily grow another pair of arms (which emerge fully at the beginning of your next turn) as a free action. These arms can wield weapons and make extra off-hand attacks, but do not grant you extra attacks in a flurry of blows. The master of the web can also use his hands for other purposes that require free hands. You can use these arms for a number of minutes per day equal to ⅓ your master of the web level. These uses can only be used in one minute increments.

When using arachnid appendages, a master of the web is treated as having the Multiweapon Fighting feat so long as he only attacks with unarmed strikes or light weapons.

You gain an extra pair of arms at 14th level, for a total of six arms for most humanoids.

This ability replaces the bonus monk combat feats gained at levels 6 and 14.

 

Web Spinning (Ex) At 7th level, a master of the web gains the web universal monster ability, able to fire webs from their hands (a grotesque, hard cavity appears in the master of the web’s palms). Unlike the standard web ability, a master of the web can throw a number of webs per day equal to his level + his Wisdom bonus. The DC to use Escape Artist or a Strength check is equal to 10 + ½ the master of the web’s level + the master of the web’s Wisdom modifier.

At 11th level, the range increment of web spinning doubles to 20 feet (a maximum range of 100 feet), and at 16th level doubles again to 40 feet (a maximum range of 200 feet).

This ability replaces wholeness of body.

 

***SIDEBAR - Web (Ex) Creatures with the web ability can use webs to support themselves and up to one additional creature of the same size. In addition, such creatures can throw a web up to eight times per day. This is similar to an attack with a net but has a maximum range of 50 feet, with a range increment of 10 feet, and is effective against targets up to one size category larger than the web spinner. An entangled creature can escape with a successful Escape Artist check or burst the web with a Strength check. Both are standard actions with a DC equal to 10 + 1/2 the creature's HD + the creature's Con modifier. Attempts to burst a web by those caught in it take a –4 penalty.

Web spinners can create sheets of sticky webbing up to three times their size. They usually position these sheets to snare flying creatures but can also try to trap prey on the ground. Approaching creatures must succeed on a DC 20 Perception check to notice a web; otherwise they stumble into it and become trapped as though by a successful web attack. Attempts to escape or burst the webbing gain a +5 bonus if the trapped creature has something to walk on or grab while pulling free. Each 5-foot-square section of web has a number of hit points equal to the Hit Dice of the creature that created it and DR 5/—. A creature can move across its own web at its climb speed and can pinpoint the location of any creature touching its web.

Webbing of Impact (Ex) At 12th level, the master of the web learns how to fire webs that compact dry in mid-air, striking their targets with bludgeoning damage equal to the master of the web’s unarmed damage. The master of the web must spend one use of their web ability for every two attack rolls made using webbing of impact (minimum 1), and any use of the ability is a full-round action. Webbing of impact are treated as ranged thrown weapons with an increment equal to the master of the web’s web spinning ability. A master of the web may use their flurry of blows with this ability. Webbing of impact cannot be used underwater. At 16th level, a master of the web learns to encapsulate liquid webs inside their webbing of impact. On a successful hit, the webbing of impact delivers the normal effects of the web ability in addition to damage.

This ability replaces abundant step.

 

Dance of the Eight-Legged Fiend (Ex) The master of the web exemplifies frenetic combat and possesses a deadly grace that defies concise description. They bound around the battlefield, striking enemies in a blur of motion that truly defines them as some of the most dangerous martial artists in all of Aventyr. Eventually they hone their frantic combat style into a deadly technique spoken of in hushed whispers by the few souls so unfortunate to have seen it performed, crisscrossing the battlefield in the blink of an eye in a blinding whirlwind of fists and fell blows that can leave entire platoons of men bludgeoned to death (or worse).

At 13th level, a master of the web may make an unarmed strike against all opponents within their reach + 5 feet, as though he had the Whirlwind Attack feat.

 

At 15th level, he may expend three web uses to use make one attack against all opponents within reach + 10 feet (15 feet for a Medium-size master of the web, 20 feet if they are using the Lunge feat).

At 17th level, he may expend four web uses to use make one attack against all opponents within reach, as if his reach was 15 feet further (20 feet for a Medium-size master of the web, 25 feet if using the Lunge feat).

At 19th level, he may expend five web uses to use make one attack against all opponents within reach, as if his reach was 20 feet further (25 feet for a Medium-size master of the web, 30 feet if they are using the Lunge feat).

This ability replaces diamond soul, empty body and quivering palm.

 

Arachnoverse (Ex) At 17th level the master of the web learns to communicate with spiders and arachnids in a fundamental way that defies rational explanation and is constantly under the effects of a speak with animals spell (limited to arachnids only). The master of the web may use animal messenger (no limited duration or distance) as a spell-like ability at will on arachnids they have conversed with, and is able to control spider swarms (up to an amount of hit dice equal to monk level; no save) within 200 feet as a swift action. This ability replaces tongue of the sun and moon.

 

Web Master: At 20th level, a master of the web becomes a complete synthesis of drow and spider. He is forevermore treated as an aberration rather than as a humanoid (or whatever the master of the web’s creature type was) for the purpose of spells and magical effects.

Additionally, the master of the web gains dominate monster (arachnids and spiders only) as an at will spell-like ability (DC 19 + Wisdom modifier), DR 5/adamantine, a +2 racial bonus to Strength, and unlimited use of arachnid appendages, brachiation, and web spinning. This ability replaces perfect self.
