Effects The blighted tree spirits haunt has a 250-ft.-radius wide-area effect that occurs entirely within a swampy area (this is always difficult terrain). The area is laden with a dozen dead trees partially submerged in dank waters with strange mold growing up the hollowed trunks. A faint mournful wailing seems to reverberate throughout the area with no immediately apparent source.

Blighted Tree Spirits HauntThe wide-area effect of this haunt encompasses individual haunts centered on dead trees. When a creature first enters the wide-area of effect they feel a sense of melancholy and must succeed a DC 25 Will save or become inexplicably depressed, overcome with a sense of hopelessness that reduces all of their movement speeds by half. On a success, the creature is no longer effects by the sorrowful effects the haunt, though they must still make the saving throw against the bog blight for each round they remain in the area of effect of individual trees.
A hopeless character must make a subsequent DC 13 Will save every round they remain in the blighted tree spirit haunt’s wide-area of effect. If any one of these saving throws are failed, the PC is overwhelmed with grief, collapsing into tears (or the equivalent emotional display for their race), and find that they do not have the willpower to move on. A character who reaches this state is unable to move themselves until they succeed a DC 25 Will save.

The strange mold covering the trunks of the trees is a contagion with active airborne spores known as bog blight. Every round a character remains within the area of effect of an individual tree with bog blight (30 ft.), they must make a DC 12 Fortitude save or suffer 1d4 points of Constitution damage (or 2d4 for plant type creatures). If a creature’s Constitution score becomes lower than 10 due to this effect, it begins to grow discolored warts and tumors all over its figure that cannot be removed except by the use of a restoration spell.

Destruction The blighted tree spirit haunt is caused by the mournful spirits of the dead trees that have succumbed to bog blight. While it is unusual for plants to become the source of a haunt, a druid, hunter, or ranger may determine the source of the apparitions and the blight with a DC 20 Knowledge (nature) check. The blighted tree spirit haunt can be destroyed by either channeling positive energy to deal enough damage to destroy all the tree spirits, or alternatively by casting remove disease upon each individual tree to remove the bog blight infestation.
